EatsNearby

This app was a candidate in the Apptivate.MS semi-finals. See how it did among the other candidates in the Social group.

EatsNearby is a foursquare client for Windows 8. While the user isn’t required to sign up or login with foursquare, if he or she does so, the app will show their friends’ recent activity, foursquare recommendations, and allow the user to check in to venues and share tips with friends.

Some technical specifications:

  • Written with XAML/C#
  • Supports landscape, portrait, and snapped views
  • Includes search contract - search for a venue from the start screen
  • Shared data across apps (roaming settings)
  • Both secondary and live tiles - pin your friends and favorite venues to your Windows 8 start screen!

Here are the libraries this app is using:

Callisto

Bing Maps SDK for Windows 8

Json.NET

Microsoft Advertising SDK for Windows 8

TCD.Serialization (for serializing complex types to/from XML)

Thanks for the comment! This isn't for Windows Phone, however, it's a Windows 8 app.

One thing I'm struggling with is how to get user feedback on my app and respond to it. Feedback through the 'rate and review' system, while helpful, can't be directly replied to. All along I've had a support email link in my app's About area, as well as a link to a website with a Uservoice.com suggestion page available. NOBODY uses either of these. Instead, I see things like "I can't log in" in the review section, with a one-star rating... ARGH. If anyone has any thoughts to share on this subject, I'd love to hear from you.

Grow tough skin? :) Users suck sometimes I like Googles move to attach reviews to public persona. Something that is frowned upon is having scrolling in two directions, and I wish the visual display from inside a place with the photos were brought out to the place search with the map. I felt like the account stuff could be under settings but can understand having it out on the screen when first starting. It's a lot of content to try to figure out how to arrange with great spacing and presentation. This is really great work can't wait to see what it evolves into. Thumbs up here and in the store!

Thanks for the feedback! This isn't about 'tough skin' but rather the ability to provide tech support to a user with an issue, or simply to provide feedback about a feature that's inquired about. I suppose if the users really aren't interested in resolving the issue, there's not a lot I can do.

Any chance for a WP8 sister app? This just screams "Put me on a phone!"
Sandra Walters Oct 15 '12 at 22:36
Definitely, just not sure on the timing yet :)

I love the app logo, very nice.
Sandra Walters Oct 11 '12 at 16:15
Giving credit where it's due, this logo is based on an icon from Syncfusion's Metro Studio package, with the foursquare mayor crown added to it. They have some great icons.
Software Developer Oct 11 '12 at 23:36
Ah nice. I use a lot of wingdings and webdings and now segoe symbol font characters, will have to check out Metro Studio too
